Financial Assistance

IIT Institute of Design (ID) regularly provides fellowships and scholarships to offset the cost of tuition. Awards are based on merit and typically announced in the fall semester.

All newly admitted students are automatically considered for fellowships and scholarships, with early admissions considered first. No additional materials are required.

Merit Fellowships

Fellowships are funded by generous patrons who share in our commitment to improve the world through advanced design theory and practice. Fellowships are awarded to newly admitted MDes, MDes + MBA and MDes + MPPA students.

ID Alumni Graduate Fellowships
Funded by the contributions from the ID alumni network, this fellowship aims to continue to build the community of design leaders by funding students of outstanding promise. Awards vary.

Grace Colby Fellowship
Funded by ID alumna and former board member Grace Colby (BS 1985), this fellowship supports a PhD student of outstanding promise.

Sam Farber Fellowship
Created by friends and family to honor the legacy of Sam Farber, the former CEO of Copco who brought human-centered design to food preparation by launching the OXO brand of kitchen implements, this fellowship provides partial tuition to a student of outstanding promise.

Rob Pew Fellowship
Funded by board member emeritus, Rob Pew, this fellowship provides partial tuition to a student of outstanding promise.

Carole and Gordon Segal Endowed Fellowship
Endowed by Carole and Gordon Segal, the Segal fellowship provides support to an ID student of outstanding promise.

Skyer Fellowship
Funded by Susannah Skyer Gupta in honor of her late father, Robert Skyer (BS 1958), the Skyer Fellowship provides financial support to an ID student with a preference for students who are underrepresented in the design community.

Merit Scholarships

Scholarships are funded by ID to recognize students of particular merit. All admitted MDes, MDes + MBA and MDes + MPPA students are considered.

Nate Thomas Public Service Scholarship 
The Nate Thomas Public Service Award is a partial-tuition scholarship for domestic degree-seeking graduate-level students at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). In pursuit of its mission to diversity and inclusion, IIT has a limited number of merit-based and need-based scholarships available to financially disadvantaged graduate students who are committed to leveraging their careers in focusing the advancement of socio-economically underrepresented or disadvantaged populations. To be considered for the Nate Thomas Public Service Scholarship through IIT, a separate scholarship application must be submitted after admission is granted by ID. How do I apply for a fellowship or scholarship?
All newly admitted students are automatically considered based on their admission materials. No separate application is needed.

What is the difference between a fellowship and a scholarship?
Fellowships are sponsored by donors; scholarships are sponsored by IIT Institute of Design.

When will I be notified of an award?
We will typically notify you of an awarded scholarship or fellowship at time of admission.

Do you award fellowships or scholarships based on need?
All fellowships and scholarships are awarded on merit. Past, present, and likely future accomplishments are considered.

If I am admitted and do not receive a fellowship or scholarship, can I apply once I begin the program?
Fellowships and scholarships are only awarded on the entering semester for newly admitted students to the program.

How much money will I be awarded?
Specific amounts will vary. In the past, fellowships and scholarships can range from 10% to about 50% tuition coverage.

Can I pick which fellowship I want to apply for?
To maximize the impact of awards, the fellowship committee decides which fellowships are distributed to whom.

Do all your programs award scholarships and fellowships?
Our scholarships and fellowships are available only for newly admitted MDes, MDes + MBA and MDes + MPPA students.

If I defer my admission, will I still receive my fellowship or scholarship when I enter the program?
Fellowships and scholarships cannot be transferred from semester to semester or year to year. If you are unable to attend in the semester in which you were awarded a fellowship or scholarship, you will be considered again for for the semester in which you enroll. However, due to the competitive nature of our programs, we cannot guarantee it will be available to you at that time.

Admission to the MDes program with Foundation is offered for the fall semester only. You will receive an email confirmation when all of your materials have been received. Admission decisions will be communicated roughly four weeks after this confirmation.
